Karuizawa is located on the southeastern slope of Mt. Asama.
It was a transportation hub and thrived as a post station.
When the Meiji government was established in the new era, Karuizawa was soon a deserted town.
This is because the feudal system was abolished and feudal lords didn't use the town.
Because the land was sterile, people in the village couldn't live by farming and the villagers left the land one after another. In the end only 500 people lived in the poor village.
A Canadian missionary came here. Alexander Croft Shaw was attracted to the village, because its beautiful scenery and the natural features and climate resembled his native town. He decided to live here.
After that, diplomats from abroad and the upper-class Japanese built cottages as their summer resorts.
Not Karuizawa is one of the most famous summer resorts.
